Salsa

Listen to any Salsa song and see why this dance can be so addictive! The complex rhthyms and drum beats pulsate through your veins and you cannot help but feel pure happiness and enjoyment from the get go! Whether your from China or Ireland or French, whether your 5 or 60 years of age, black or white, it doesn’t matter, Salsa concurs ALL! It’s one of the most popular dances around the world now and you can dance it on a social basis for fun or perform it on a competitive level. ETOWN SALSA can take care of you from your baby steps and educate you through the way. Check out below what we have to offer.

Bachata

“WHAT IS BACHATA?” you ask? It comes from the word ‘Amargue’ meaning bitter. It originates from the country side in the Dominican Republic and its a music that can be compared to Blues in where the lyrics talk about love and hate relationships.

ETOWN SALSA teaches the two main styles of Bachata which are traditional Dominican and urban modern styles.

This level is a must for anyway that has never taken Salsa before. This class session is not equivalent to a one hour class you may have taken at a nightclub or resort before. This is a 5 or 6 hour series that progresses each class. There is review as well each class to keep good practice your fundamentals. (NOTE: If you have danced other genres before and feel that you can advance quickly, please contact us for a private to advance to LEVEL II quicker.) You will learn initially some basic patterns in Casino Rueda (from Cuba) and then will move onto L.A. Style patterns for more partner work. Here are more details of the content covered in the session:
  • Introductory Salsa footwork
  • Lead and follow techniques
  • How to find the music
  • Keeping your timing
  • Partnering technique including how to cue.
  • Beginner combination patterns.
  • Dance etiquette on the social dance floor.

This level is where most students spend their time practicing foundation and progressing to a more comfortable level. Initially leaders will find it more challenging and so the learning curve is more difficult but also more rewarding in the end. It is recommended to combine your learnings with practice at any social dancing events in order to progress. These are offered in 4 weeks setups. You will most likely spend months if not a whole year learning foundation and technique. Note: N.Y. Style is recommended for performance level training.

  • Salsa Level I review
  • Continued leading and following techniques.
  • More challenging combinations and patterns.
  • More Partnering techniques including how to cue your partner and when to cue.
  • Beginner styling for men and ladies.
  • Introduction to Shines and implementing in pattern work.
  • Introduction to multiple turns/ In & Out / Open break combos / Combining crossbody lead with turns
  • and more....

This level requires at least a couple months of Salsa 1.5 level classes plus some social dance experience. Music background such as singing or playing a musical instrument for at least one year is an asset for this style. As much as you may feel like its starting over, the biggest emphasis in this class is timing and shines to embrace the timing.

  • Shine combinations
  • Continued leading and following techniques.
  • Beginner and Intermediate combinations and patterns.
  • More Partnering techniques including how to cue your partner and when to cue.
  • Beginner styling for men and ladies.
  • and more....
This level is ideal for those that would like to perform. In order to be at this level, you either have to go through our levels and be recommended or you would do a 1 on 1 audition in order to see if you will make the team. Summers we hold auditions.
  • Shine combinations
  • Choreography and musicality
  • Advanced combinations and patterns.
  • ON2 training and techniques.
  • Advanced styling for men and ladies.

Dance management software
This class will introduce to you the world of Bachata dancing and in essence Latin dancing! Its perfect for absolute beginners and even dancers that have experience in other genres. Upper body movement are common place for the Latin dancer and so we also teach proper movements for this. Of course its not an instant process to make this happen but as anything, practice makes perfect! You will learn a set number of patternwork and turns and as well footwork patterns that go with the music. We teach what instruments pertain to this dance and how they contribute to musicality and timing. The best part of this dance you will learn is 'how to lead' or 'how to follow'. With this foundation , you will be able to advance to the next level. But if you feel you are struggling or tend to forget fundamentals, we encourage repeating the series before advancing.

Once you feel you have the basic fundamental training down and you have started social dancing for at least a month regularly, you are ready to take this intermediate level.

This will be a continuation of the Level I and will develop the lead and follow foundation by challenging leaders in pattern work and developing ladies foundation in balance, styling and spinning. This class is a fusion of both Modern and Dominican styles. In order for you to feel you are progressing and retaining fundamentals being taught in this class, you are required to social dance at different public dance nights, such as our own dedicated Social Practice for students on Sunday nights from 8-11pm. Level 2 moves much faster in the combinations and there is more expectation of a solid foundation to do this level.

The format of the class is to either drop-in or purchase an 8 class punch card to take more classes more often. Are punchcards are flexible to be used for both Salsa and Bachata classes of the same time denomination. These cards are valid for up to one year and you can use them 2 nights a week that we have Lev II classes available.

Well, ETOWN SALSA will give you a good dose of Latin dances to educate yourself on not only the social etiquette but also the in’s and out’s of all the dances! No pun intended!
